RIP A Remix Manifesto

This documentary really made me think about the industry around art in general. As an artist, I would not be upset if someone used my work as inspiration as long as what they made is different than what I had created. So recoloring something is not okay, but drawing my character in your own style and changing a few characteristics is something I would not be upset about. When it comes to music, things are a bit ridiculous. I know there are issues with youtubers being threatened with lawsuits for playing PART of a song in their video! That is ridiculous, in my opinion. It is a sound for crying out loud. They are not trying to pass it off as their own, they are just letting it play in the background.

Kiki Smith

Firstly, let me start out by saying I was expecting the wrong artist! I was confused for a hot second when she came out because I was expecting someone of a whole different race and age. Honestly, I am not even sure how the heck that happened. The talk itself was kind of underwhelming. She did not seem prepared to speak at all. She talked more about the thousand and one things she did to each piece of art more than why she created them and the weight they were meant to carry. I am not a fan of her art and am mildly disappointed. There were quite a few pieces that looked very crude and unfinished, which is not what I expected of an artist of her caliber. She did not even get through all of her pictures and she seemed to have ran out of time which really makes me believe she was highly unprepared. In short, I would have rather been in class, I think.

Logo Discussion

It was very difficult to come up with an idea at first. I am not really the brainstorming type. Normally inspiration will just hit me from somewhere and I run with it, changing my ideas along the way.  At some point I just thought of heels for dogs and realized the shoe could be transformed into a body. I wish I could say that it was fun creating this logo; however, it was just stressful. I am surprised at how the critique went, which is fairly well in my opinion. No one really had bad or negative things to say and I am glad about that. As for everyone else's logos, I was very surprised (well, not really??) at the diversity of the ideas and creations we all had come up with.

A Brief History of Type

I am unsure of what to even say about this website. I was not interested in it and found it quite dry. The complexity of the way that fonts are created and related is a bit surprising because we don't typically think about the fonts we are using and what they are really created for.
